Treatment of these cells with varying concentrations of fenbendazole for 2 or 24 h resulted in different survival rates, which were measured by colony formation assay. Survival data were analyzed and reported as yield-corrected surviving fractions. Treatment with fenbendazole at the highest dose tested did not significantly affect survivals in monolayer cultures.
Side Effects
Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum, anthelmintic drug that also has been studied as a possible cancer treatment. However, it is currently listed as a veterinary drug and Health Canada does not endorse the use of this medication for cancer treatment.
The drug works by binding to b-tubulins of nematode cells and interfering in their dimerization with a-tubulins, which inhibits the polymerization of tubulin into microtubules, an important part of the cytoskeleton that gives shape and support to cells.
